Asbestos

Marques, SA is equipped and suitably qualified by an accredited laboratory to perform measurements of concentrations of breathable asbestos fibers in ambient air, namely:

  • Employs the methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) called Determination of Airborne Fibre Number Concentrations. Recommended Method, by Phase Contrast Optical Microscopy (Membrane Filter Method), Geneva, 1997.
  • Relevant national legislation in determining concentrations of asbestos fibers in the air, which validates previous methodology, can be found in Decree-Law 266/2007, of 24th of July, which transposed into national law Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council Directive 2003/18/EC of 27th of March, and into the Regional Legislative Decree n. 12/2009/A, of 28th of July in the case of the Azores. Any other method, namely the U.S. NIOSH 1994 has no national and European legal validity.
  • The Fibers Control Laboratory carrying out the determinations of the concentrations of breathable asbestos fibers from samples collected by Marques S.A.'s Technical Experts was accredited from 1991 to 2002 by IPQ - Portuguese Institute for Quality (Accreditation No. 91 / L 66, NP EN 45 001) and from 2002 was controlled periodically for quality of microscopic counts by IOM - Institute of Occupational Medicine (Edinburgh), of the World Health Organization.
